ABOUT US

Welcome to Saint George’s Church, an Episcopal Church in Bradenton, FL where ALL are welcomed.

As a mission-minded congregation, we share God’s love with others by providing food for the hungry and a safe place for those seeking God's will in their lives.

History

Our History

The church was formed in early 1964, and services were held in the annex of the Holiday Inn's kitchen on US 41. There was plenty of room, but also plenty of noise from pots and pans!

An eight-acre lot was soon purchased on Saunders Road (the present site), and the funds were pledged and a mortgage obtained to build the present parish hall. This would serve as a church, parish hall, kitchen, and Sunday school. Chairs and kneelers had to be set up and removed each Sunday. During the service, there was no doubt that we knew when the school was in session!

By 1967, the church had been growing, so the much-needed education and office building was built. In those years, a popular fundraiser was our annual antique show, which brought in dealers from all around. After a few years, we had to stop due to a long-drawn-out reconstruction of our street.

Our church continued to grow and had its ups and downs, along with a normal change-over of vicars and rectors. The back four acres of our property were sold at one time to bring in needed funds.

Plans for the present church building were made in 1984. After much planning and fundraising, it was finished and dedicated on Palm Sunday, 1986.

Priest-in-Charge

Very Rev. Brian Beno

Ordained 48 years ago, Fr. Brian began his service to the Episcopal Church as Rector of St. Mark’s in Waupaca, WI, and then served for nearly a decade as the Dean of St. Paul’s Cathedral in Fond du Lac, WI. Since then, Fr. Brian and his wife Terry have served in half-time transitional positions at Good Samaritan in Clearwater and St. Ignatius in Antioch, IL, before serving St. George in February 2022. Terry began her career as a music therapist/director of therapeutic recreation in a 250-bed nursing home and then transitioned to teaching 1st and 2nd graders for 13 years. Brian and Terry were married at St. Paul’s Cathedral in 2005. Serving St. George is now their primary focus, and as opportunities present, they enjoy their “adventures” together, taking mini-road trips, discovering Southwest Florida, and enjoying one another’s interests.

As a Deacon, he served Bradenton's Christ Episcopal Church and Palmetto's St. Mary's Episcopal Church before being called back to St. George's in 2020. A retired Navy veteran with 32 years of service, Mike has been married to his wife Patricia for over 35 years. They have 3 daughters, 8 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. When not at the church, Mike and Patricia can be found at Manatee County Extension Service as Master Gardener Volunteers.  They both love to travel and see new places.
